The Best of the Year So Far: 2011

While it's fair to say I've been in a reading slump this summer, overall my 2011 has been fantastic! I am currently at 55 books read for the year which totally blows me away since my reading total for the entirety of 2010 was 75. So yeah, you better believe there have been some amazing reads so far this year! I thought what better time to reflect on the positive than on this halfway point in the year (how did that happen?) and see what books have stuck with me so far and if those will make it through to be some of my ultimate favorites for the year.

Rather than give a top five, I decided to pick my favorites from the genres I love to read. All titles link to my original reviews:

Favorites so far in the Historical Fiction Category:
Small Wars by Sadie Jones

The Sandalwood Tree by Elle Newmark

Favorites so far in the Literary Fiction Category:
The Bird House by Kelly Simmons

Wrecker by Summer Wood

Faith by Jennifer Haigh

Favorites so far in the Chick Lit Category:
She's Gone Country by Jane Porter

There's Cake in My Future by Kim Gruenenfelder

Favorite so far in the Classics Category:
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Favorite so far in the Audio Book Category:
The Heights by Peter Hedges

These are the books I would, without hesitation, recommend to anyone from my reading this year. What are yours?

  1. I also read Jane Eyre this year and LOVED it! So glad that I discovered that classic ... I'm reading Faith right now and I'm really enjoying it! Will definitely be checking out some of those books that you listed!

  2. Thanks for the list as I will be in need of another audio book soon. I am reading Wrecker now (that I won from you) and am really enjoying it.

  3. I haven't read a single one on your list. I must read faster.

  4. Great list! I loved The Sandalwood Tree and Small Wars. Jane Eyre is among my favorite classics.

  5. Excellent choices. They're all on my list (well, except for Jane Eyre which I re-read last year).

  6. Looking at your list, I realize that these are all books that interested me when you posted your reviews! Now to follow up on them... Thanks for sharing!

  7. If I made my 2011 list today, Small Wars would be on it, too. Loved that book!

  8. I have heard amazing things about the 1st two but I am not interested in historical fiction.

Glad your having a great reading year so far, I hope it continues.

  9. Unbroken knocked my socks off! That's about it. Oh, I really like The Paris Wife.

  10. I really want to read some of those!

And again why does the JE cover suck so much! It looks like she is a vampire, sigh

  11. i feel like i've been in a bit of a summer reading slump too. nothing has really inspired me and made me want to read it. glad to see you loved 'she's gone country' so much! that was one of my favorite books too.

  12. You've had a great 2011 so far. Enjoy your reading break (slump). I always read the most right after I've had a reading break!

  13. I loved Faith, but The Heights (not so much). You have had a terrific year thus far.

  14. What a great year you have had so far!

I have to second Jane Porter. Odd Mom Out and Mrs. Perfect were bathtub reading earlier in the year, and I found them both charming!

  15. Great list! Small Wars has been on my wishlist, and I have The Heights. I haven't read any of these except Jane Eyre, and that cover is BEAUTIFUL! I'll have to check out some of the others.

  16. I loved Faith too and found some more books to read off this list.

  17. You are having a great reading year! Glad to see Jane Eyre on there. I would recommend Good Grief by Lolly Winston.
