My Own Personal Read-a-Thon: It's Started!

Yesterday was the official start of my own personal read-a-thon. The boyfriend left town, so last night after work I went to the gym, came home, made dinner, turned off the TV, and opened a book! It was easy; I liked it!

I read a little over 100 pages of A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. I have to finish this by Sunday because this is for book club. It's going to be a struggle. This book got a ton of buzz and you know, won a little thing called the Pulitzer but I. Just. Don't. Get. It. Regardless it's perfect for book club so I can talk to others about it. I'm about 100 pages from the end so I know I'll get there!

I started 5th Ave., 5 A.M. by Sam Wasson. So far it's quite the easy read. I hope to finish it tonight as I have a lot more time to read tonight (no gym class!).

Feel free to join in the read-a-thon fun! I'll be reading until Sat. night :)

  1. Ah, personal readathons are the BEST! I hope you have all sorts of fun and get a ton read! I wish I could join in, but alas, there's too much to do for me right now. Though I still hope to get lots of reading done despite that.

  3. I'm glad to hear The Goon Squad isn't all it's cracked up to be. I heard so many good things, but it didn't sound interesting to me at all.

But hope the rest of your readathon goes better!!

  4. I tend to enjoy personal read-a-thons more than the real thing, only because there is no pressure to post while doing it. I always get distracted by posting updates.

  5. Good luck with the readathon! I can't wait to hear your thoughts about A Visit from the Goon Squad. It's been hyped up quite a bit and after all the reviews I've read, I wanted to read it, but now I'm unsure. Hopefully the last 100 pages will blow you away.

  6. I went to bed at 8pm last night feeling exhausted - reading was not in the stars (but today I had plenty of energy)...LOL

Hope you get a lot accomplished

  7. My husband is out of town now too but as much reading as I thought would happen, I can already tell it is just a pipe dream! I have not been affected by the Goon Squad hype at all because despite the hype and Pulitzer, I have absolutely no desire to read it. I'll be interested to what what your book club thinks of it.

  8. Have fun with your read-a-thon! I wish I could join you, but this weekend is crazy busy (three sets of visitors!!). I'm reading Fifth Avenue 5 A.M. as well and I'm also enjoying it :)

    Happy reading!

  9. Here's what I've been finding with award books .. I don't get most of them either. Life of Pi ... really?!? It was ... OK .. and different, but ... If on a Winter's Night ... never could finish it, even though I tried three times. It might be better if the awards were given by "real" readers like us, instead of the intelligentsia who want to show how smart they are by giving the awards to books that ... well, are just too darn esoteric or metaphysical for the average Joe and Jane.

Good luck on your readathon! :)

  10. I Just Didn't Get Good Squad either. I ended up linking to both gushing reviews and aghast reviews on mine! Hope you got through it ok.
